Additional Information
Charles was John and Elizabeth’s fourth child. He had siblings Florence, William, James, Harriet, John, Lottie, Walter and Nellie. They lived in Blackfriars Road, London.
Charles married Ellen Cocklin on 10 May 1915 at St Mary’s Church, Lambeth.
Initially, he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the London Regiment but was transferred to the Labour Corps on 24 February 1916, he served in Ypres where he was wounded in August 1917 then again in November 1918. He was invalided home in March 1919 but had a major breakdown and was declared unfit for further service due to mental instability.
He died of “sickness” on 21 December 1920 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
There is some discrepancy regarding his age: all the documents point to him being born on 31 October 1887 – census, baptism and marriage certificate - but the age on his gravestone is 29, making his birthdate c. 1891.
