Horace was born in West Hampstead on 21 December 1887 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Hampstead on 27 May 1888. His father, William, was a house painter and decorator and he had five older siblings – Ernest, Maud, Edward, Blanche and Edith. His mother Emily died when he was only 3 years old and his father brought the family up in Willesden.
By the 1901 census, Horace was a Photo Boy and Print Packer.
By 1911, Horace was living with his future wife, Dorothy Patston, and her extended family in Newington St Mary. His occupation on the census is described as “Professional”. However, when his son Edgar was born the following year, it is shown as Music Hall Artist on Edgar’s birth certificate. Their daughter Lily was born in November 1913 and the couple married on 19 December 1916 in Lambeth Register Office. Horace is shown on the marriage certificate as being in the Army and Dorothy was a Music Hall Artist.
By 1918, their address was shown as Arlingford Road, Norwood.
Horace died in Epsom War Hospital, Ewell, of pneumonia and influenza on 3 March 1919. He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
