Julian was born in London and grew up in Clapham. His French father, Francois, was a cook in a hotel, his mother’s name was Rosina and he had three younger siblings Victor, Louis and Marguerite.
When he was 4 years old he was admitted to Stockwell College and attended there from 3 April 1900 to 18 July 1902 when he left to go to “Boys School”.

When the 1911 census was taken, the family were living in Lansdowne Road, Clapham in a seven room house and they employed a young servant. Julian was 15 but his occupation was shown as “Engineer”.

Julian joined the Navy in 1914 and was slightly wounded in action in the Dardanelles in 1915. His records show that he was 5ft 6½ins tall with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion.
He transferred to the General Air Service on 31 December 1915 and was given the rating Air Mechanic 1.

By 1918 he was suffering from ill health and was in and out of hospital before being discharged on 25 May 1919. He died on 6 May 1921 and is buried in Streatham Park cemetery.
