According to the 1911 census, Walter and Francis Smith has eight children. The eldest shown on the form was Bertram, followed by Charles, Reginald, Iris, Edward, Hilda and baby Clement so one of the little Smiths must have been away from home. Walter was a Police Constable and all the children were born in Lambeth.
Reginald was born on 9 December 1898 and was baptised on 5 February 1899 in St John the Evangelist Church in Brixton.
He enlisted as soon as he was old enough and joined the Guards Machine Gun Corps as a Trooper.
He died in Hampstead Hospital of wounds on 2 November 1918, just a few weeks before his 20th birthday. He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
