Additional Information
Herbert Duke Street’s family were comfortably off and his father William Benjamin Street described himself as a Gentleman on Herbert’s Baptism record.
Herbert was born in Guildford during 1881 and was baptised on 5 October 1881 at St John the Evangelist Church, Stoke-near-Guildford. His mother’s name was Alice, nee Elkins, and he had siblings Mabel, Benjamin and Arthur.
Herbert moved around quite a bit. At the 1891 census the family were living in Portsmouth and had one servant; by 1901 Herbert was a Clerk and was boarding in Newport, Monmouthshire then ten years later he was living with his mother, who was now widowed, and his sister in Hove, Sussex and was a Bank Cashier. His mother did not need to work, stating that she had “private means” on the census.
The 4th Reserve Battalion was originally based in Horsham but later sent to Gallipoli, Gaza, Jerusalem etc before being deployed to Armienes in France.
Herbert was a 2nd Lieutenant but little can be found about his military career. He died in St Thomas’s Home, Westminster Bridge, London and is buried in Streatham Park cemetery.
