Nothing is known of Arthur’s early life but he married Martha in the Register Office at Clapham Junction in 1911. They had three children, Arthur, born in April 1911, Frederick who was born in 1912 and died in infancy and Ada Martha who was born in February 1915.
Arthur was a Plasterer, living in Winstanley Road, Clapham Junction, when he enlisted in 1915. He was 34 years old, 5’ 3” tall with several tattoos.
He joined the 1/6th Battalion of the Essex Regiment and was initially sent to the Balkans. He was taken ill on a later tour to Alexandria and was invalided home on 6 June 1918 on the “Glengorm Castle”. He was discharged on 6 August 1918 as “No longer physically fit for war service”.
He died on 17 October 1918 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery where he is commemorated on the foot of the war memorial.
