Gerald was the oldest of seven siblings. His father was a Military man and the family moved around quite a bit – Gerald was born in Pevensey Sussex but younger brother Noel was born in India, Kenneth in Woolwich, Dorothy, Laurence and Maurice in Ireland and Louis in Wimbledon.
Gerald was born on 7 February 1895 and baptised in Malborough Lines Church, Aldershot on 2 June 1895.
By the 1911 census his father, Henry John Beadle, had died and Gerald was living, with his mother and the rest of the family, in Evelyn Road, South Wimbledon. He was a junior clerk in a solicitors office.
Gerald enlisted when he was 18. He was 5ft 7½ins tall with brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He weighed 119lbs and had a scar on his forehead. He joined his father’s old regiment, serving in the 4th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own).
He was killed in action on 28 April 1915, aged just 20, and is buried in Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Belgium and is commemorated in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon.
