Additional Information
George Henry Dellera married Elisabeth Tavener in 1870 and they had a big family – Charles, George, John and Anne came along before Joseph William was born and he was followed by Mabel, Ethel, Edith and Elizabeth. George Snr was a Butler and in 1883 he was charged with stealing a silver claret jug valued at £25 from his master Richard Ogilvy, but was found not guilty. It did not appear to harm his career as he was still a Butler at the next census.
Joseph grew up in London. He was born in Shoreditch and the family had moved to Chelsea by the 1891 census. He became a builder’s clerk and married Annie Louise Pritchard on 1 September 1906 in St Luke’s Church, Kensington and Chelsea. They had four children: Eileen (Ellen), Lilian, Olive who died as a baby and Raymond. At the 1911 census they were living in Fulham but later moved to Florence Road, Wimbledon.
Joseph enlisted in Wimbledon and joined the 99th Siege Bty. of the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner. He died on 27 June 1918 after being overcome by gas and is buried in Aire-Sur-La-Lys Communal Cemetery. He is commemorated in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon.
