Charles was born on 15 December 1886 and baptised on 16 January 1887 in Turnham Green. His father, Charles Charleton Godbold was a Nurseryman and the family moved around quite a lot from Chiswick where Charles Jnr was born to Maida Vale where his sister Edith was born and later to Acton where Nellie, his youngest sister was born. By the 1911 census the family, which also included his mother Elizabeth (nee Sheercroft), were living at 125 Russell Road, Wimbledon. Charles Jnr was a postman and his sisters were also working, Edith as a dressmaker and Nellie as a florist’s assistant.
In the summer of 1914 Charles Jnr married Daisy Ethel Nightingale in Kingston and they set up home at 54 Sydney Road, Raynes Park. They had one daughter, Joyce.
Charles joined the Royal Fusiliers and was killed in action on 16 April 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras memorial and in Holy Trinity Church.
