Harvey Lewis Hale was born in Addleston and baptised in East Mosely on 4 September 1898. His father, William, was a signalman on the Railway. His mother’s name was Charlotte and he had an older brother William. There were also three younger sisters, Gladys, Lottie and Dorothy, but sadly they all died very young.

The 1911 census shows the family living at 190 Effra Road but by 1917 they had moved to 233 Haydons Road, Wimbledon.

Harvey enlisted and joined the 6th Battalion of the East Kent Regiment and he was killed in action on 17 August 1917 aged about 20.
He is buried in the Windmill British Cemetery , Monchy-le-Preux, Pas de Calais and commemorated in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon.
