William Giles Hoddinett was born in Battersea on 6 August 1875 and baptised in St George’s Hanover Square on 10 October. His father, also William, was a fishmonger and they lived in Wimbledon. His mother’s name was Emma and he had two much older siblings, Elizabeth and Joseph.
He married Mary Smith on 15 April 1906 in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon. By this time he was a painter working for the local Council. They had a son, James Ling Hoddinett on 10 February 1907 and he was baptised in Holy Trinity Church.
Their address at the 1911 census was 10 Cowdry Road, Wimbledon and William’s mother was now living with them as his father had died in 1909.
William enlisted at the start of the war and his embarkation date is shown as 7 October 1914. He was a Private in the Coldstream Guards and was wounded after just a few days active service, dying from those wounds on 25 October 1914. He is buried in Poperinge Communal Cemetery and commemorated in Holy Trinity Church. His gravestone is inscribed with the words “God grant him eternal rest”.
