Sidney was born in Wimbledon in 1892. He was the third son of David, a Postman, and Ester (nee Smalls). The family, which included siblings Edgar, Albert, Bertram, Ernest and John all lived in Wimbledon and in 1911 their address was 33 Evelyn Road. It was a sizeable house and they also had a boarder Rachel Dermott at the time of the census.

In 1911, Sidney was a messenger boy. In time he joined the Royal Fusiliers and served as a Private.

In 1915 he married Ella (nee Joyner) in Holy Trinity Church on 5 June. They lived at 4 The Gables, Queens Road, Wimbledon.

Sidney transferred to the 7th battalion of the East Surrey Regiment and had temporary promotion to 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in Action on 30 March 1917, aged 25 and is buried in Fauberg-D'Amiens Cemetery.

His headstone is inscribed with a message from his wife "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Loving memories Wifie"
