Charles was born in the City of London on 5 October 1876 and spent his early years in the city.

He married Alice Maud Cane in Birmingham on 24 December 1896 and they moved to Worcestershire.
There is no record of him on the 1911 census and it appears that he moved to Canada, took Canadian citizenship and became a fireman.
He enlisted in Brandon, Canada on 18 May 1915 and sailed from Halifax on 1 April 1916. The records show that he was 5ft 9ins tall, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. He made a Military Will at this time, leaving everything to his mother.
He still had family in the UK and his mother lived in Hampton Wick. One record shows his wife living at 45 Melrose Avenue, Wimbledon.
He was a member of the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles (Saskatchewan Regiment).
Charles was killed in action on 5 June 1917 and is buried in Bois-Carre British Cemetery.
After his death, Alice, his widow, moved to Birmingham to live with her mother. He is remembered on the plaque in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon.
