Hugh was born on 11 March 1878 in Shepherds Bush and baptised on 16 May of that year in St Stephen’s Church, Shepherds Bush.
His father, William, was a Brewer. William had had five children with his first wife. After her death he married Emma Grace Pritchett and they had Hugh.
Hugh grew up in Hammersmith, then the family moved to Hampshire (1891 census) and Putney (1901 census). He married Caroline Emma Lilley on 5 September 1903 in St Luke’s Church, West Norwood and they settled at 8 Dudley Road. Hugh was a Commercial Clerk at a Pottery Works. The 1911 census shows that the Dudley Road house had seven rooms and Hugh and Caroline had their 4 year old niece Gwendoline Coles staying with them and they had a 19 years old servant, Alice.
Hugh joined the Army and served with the 21st County of London Battalion of the London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles).
He was killed in action on 18 May 1916 and is buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Sanchez and commemorated in Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon.
