Military

During the build-up to and immediately after the outbreak of war in August 1914, communities and local authorities all over the country prepared for war. From a military and civil defence perspective, this involved recruiting and training men for military service, organising domestic security and clarifying the role of the police and fire brigade. Auxiliary staff were also needed to support the existing services.
