War Diary Extract for 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment on 17 February 1917. This was the day that William Sorrell was killed. It was recorded that day that hostile artillery was above normal, and it was discovered later that the attack had been given away, and that the Germans had reinforced their lines with machine guns. Casualties were very heavy and out of 10 officers, only one returned uninjured.
