Wartime Industry

Merton industry played a vital role in supporting the war effort between 1914 and 1918. It was important during wartime for firms to maintain the normal supply of goods and services for the home market. Many local firms continued with their normal production but others switched to manufacturing goods specifically for the war effort - either adapting their existing goods, or converting for the production of munitions, uniform or equipment for the military.
