Silver War Badge Entry
Additional Information
Private Cyril Edwards was awarded this Badge. See below for an explanation from the Imperial War Museum.
"The WW1 War Badge, commonly known as the Silver War Badge, was first issued in 1916 to service personnel who were honorably discharged due to wounds, sickness, or old age. It was designed to be worn on civilian clothes and served as a symbol of service during the war. The badge, which also includes the royal cypher "GRI" (for Georgius Rex Imperator), was awarded to those who met specific criteria, including those who served at home or overseas, and was intended to prevent men from being unfairly labeled as shirkers due to their absence from military service.
